Weekend Recap
The Butler men's track and field team moved back into the USTFCCCA National Poll, ranked at #21, after posting top-performances between the Rick Erdmann Twilight (EKU) and the Black and Gold Invite (Vanderbilt) over the weekend.
Butler is back in the spotlight after making an appearance on the national rankings earlier this season at No. 19, following top performances at the Raleigh Relays. The Bulldogs are currently the only BIG EAST team in the top-25 on the latest poll.
Butler's ranking is led by several standout distance events squads. The Bulldogs 1,500-meter four-man event squad led by freshman
Jesse Hamlin is currently No. 2 in the country. Hamlin is ranked 9
th in the event nationally, followed by
Simon Bedard at 17
th and
Euan Makepeace at 19
th.
At the Rick Erdmann Twilight, Hamlin (3:38.87), Bedard (3:39.91) and Makepeace (3:40.23) all broke the previous school record, sweeping spots second through fourth, respectively. Hamlin's mark is one of the top collegiate 1,500-debut times in all of NCAA history.
Matthew Wigelsworth (3:43.67) took ninth in the race, also moving into the top-10 all-time list and completing the event squad.
Butler's 3,000-meter steeplechase crew of
Remi Schyns,
Clark Otte and
Jonathan Besselink is the top event squad in the country through the first three student-athletes.
In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Rick Erdmann Twilight, competing at his former school, Schyns clocked an 8:40.57, which currently ranks fourth in the NCAA for the event and second in school history. Besselink (8:41.63) and Otte (8:45.98) moved to fifth and tenth on the national performance list.
Butler's 5,000-meter event squad is ranked No. 9 in the nation and the Bulldogs' 10,000-meter team comes in at No. 11.
The Bulldogs will look to make more event squad strides this weekend. Butler is set to make appearances at two meets once again, with a majority of the squad heading to the Clark Wood Open at Louisville. Makepeace, Bedard and
Barry Keane will travel to the invite-only Oregon Relays to compete in the elite men's 5,000-meter.
