RESULTS
Barry Keane claimed the 10,000-meter title on Friday as Butler wrapped up day one of the 2021 Outdoor Track and Field Championship at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Keane's win helped move the Butler men to second place after today's events.
Dawgs on the Board
Keane cruised to a final time of 29:22.37, a full 12 seconds ahead of Villanova's Andrew Marston who took second. He is now a two-time BIG EAST champion in the 10,000-meter. Teammate
Simon Bedard was fourth with a time of 29:58.57.
The Bulldogs picked up three places worth of points in Friday's other final running event, the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Remi Schyns led the Butler trio with a second-place finish of 8:45.54.
Jonathan Besselink took fifth and
Clark Otte came in seventh.
From the field, Butler picked up some points in the long jump, headed by
Brendan Watkins fourth-place finish, going for a distance of 7.29m. Zac Stanely came in sixth with a mark of 7.26m.
Fellow freshman
Drew Herman just missed the podium in the men's high jump, but snagged fourth-place points, clearing a height of 1.95m.
Freshman
Jack Elder is in fifth place after five events of the decathlon. His highest event finish came in the 100-meter dash section, taking second with a time of 11.17. The remaining five events will allow Elder to climb the ranks on Saturday.
Men Moving On
In preliminary events, Garett Kern was an automatic qualifier for the men's 100-meter finals with a time of 10.84.
Jacob Uhl will be seeded in the final eight of tomorrow's 400-meter dash after clocking a 48.74, taking second in his section. Uhl just missed a spot in the 200-meter dash, taking ninth overall between the sections.
Fellow event runner
Tom Pitkin will move on to the 400-meter hurdles final, advancing on a cool time of 54.36 that earned him second in his heat.
Women's Point Scorers
In Butler's final events of the day,
Angelina Ellis blazed to a life-time best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, taking third with a time of 10:05.74. She earned the women's only podium finish for day one.
Kami Hankins and
Maddie McLain went six and seven in the women's 5,000-meter run, clocking in at 35:40.67 and 35:47.10, respectively.
Emily Royston came in ninth to round out the squad.
Niki Ezeh picked up points for Butler in the women's long jump, taking fifth with a mark of 5.60m.
Along with her heptathlon events,
Karmen Koch was sixth in the javelin, throwing for a distance of 37.78m
Women's Saturday Events
On the track, Ezeh ran a career-best 13.81 in the women's 100-meter hurdles, breaking her own school record, to win her section of the prelims and advance to Saturday's final. Teammate
McKenzie Greene also qualified for the finals with a time of 14.66.
Carson Fields and
Lily Hess will represent Butler in the women's 100-meter after going one and two in the section, qualifying on times of 11.87 and 12.06, respectively.
Butler also got two Bulldogs in the scoring field of the women's 200-meter. Fields (24.30) and
Rebecca Collester (24.74) got in, taking second and third in their respective heats.
Freshman
Jill Vogler will be in the top eight of the women's 400-meter after a life-time best performance of 56.11 in the prelims.
Corinna Pena (4:31.44) and
Katherine Olsen (4:38.85) strode to an automatic qualification to tomorrow's 1,500-meter final. Saturday's final will feature the top-12 runners from Friday's prelims in that particular event.
After four events in the heptathlon,
Karmen Koch and
Nina Hilt sit at third and fourth.
Remi Beckham is in seventh.
Koch and Hilt went second and third in both the heptathlon 100-meter hurdles and high jump. Koch also took third in the shot put and 200-meter dash sections of the multis.
The long jump, javelin throw, and 800-meter run, some of the Bulldog's strongest multi events, are slated for tomorrow.
