The Size of the Fight in the Dawg(s)
Euan Makepeace (5,000-meter),
Remi Schyns (3,000-meter steeplechase),
Barry Keane (10,000-meter) and
Angelina Ellis (3,000-meter steeplechase) will highlight the weekend for the Bulldogs.
By advancing to the NCAA Championship field, all four Bulldogs will earn USTFCCCA All-American honors. First team, second team and honorable mention designations will be determined by individual finish.
Butler is one of just five teams to have a men's representative in the premiere 5,000-meter, 10,000-meter and 3,000-steeplechase events. Stanford, Iowa State, BYU and BIG EAST foe Georgetown are the only other schools to have at least one student-athlete qualify in all three.
The Bulldogs are also one of five teams in the nation to have both a men's and women's qualifier in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Oregon, BYU, Minnesota and Michigan are the other programs with a representative in both genders of the race.
Men's 5,000-Meter Final
Makepeace will make his much anticipated return the NCAA field in the men's 5,000-meter. Makepeace last advanced to the national championships in the event in 2017, finishing 24
th overall.
The event is a one-section final at the championships set for the evening on Friday, June 11.
The redshirt senior from Loughborough, United Kingdom advanced out of the East Regional with a time of 13:41.21, good for fourth-place overall, which is also his seeding in the championship field.
Makepeace is the current school record-holder in the 5,000-meter, setting the standard at 13:30.55 at the Oregon Relays invite-only race in April of this year. He led the Butler trio of Keane and
Simon Bedard to record-breaking times, as well.
The race will be Makepeace's last appearance in a Butler uniform, capping an incredible career as a Bulldog on both the track and cross country course.
Men's 10,000-Meter Final
Wednesday evening will be highlighted by the lone track final of the day: the premiere men's 10,000-meter. Keane will make his debut on the national stage in the event after coming up short at the 2019 East Regional two seasons ago. He is seeded ninth in the field.
The two-time BIG EAST 10,000-meter champion advanced to the 2021 championships with an eighth-place finish at the East Regional, posting a time of 28:54.74. At the Raleigh Relays earlier this season, Keane ran a life-time best mark of 28:34.88 in the event.
The men's 10,000-meter race is made up of one of the toughest fields in NCAA Championship history. However, Keane is one of the few finalists to have competed on the updated track at Hayward Field, running a personal-best and school record breaking time in the elite men's 5,000-meter invitational race at the Oregon Relays in April.
Men's 3,000-meter Steeplechase
Schyns will represent Butler in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase semifinal on Wednesday, June 9. Schyns advanced to the championships with a third-place finish at the East Regional with a qualifying and personal-best time of 8:40.39.
The event will be broken into two sections, with Schyns competing in the second heat. In the preliminary field of 24 individuals, Schyns' time ranks 12
th overall. The top 12 individuals from the semifinal race will advance to the finals, slated for Friday, June 11.
Women's 3,000-meter Steeplechase
Ellis will round out Butler's national competitors, taking the track for the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Ellis captured the 12
th and final spot in the East Regional after clocking the fastest closing lap of the 12 qualifiers, running a personal-best 10:04.22.
Ellis will take the track on Thursday, June 10 for the semifinals. Like her event counterpart in Schyns, Ellis will run in the second heat. The top 12 individuals from the preliminary race will advance to the finals, scheduled for Sunday, June 12.
