2022-23 Non-Conference Schedule

Butler has finalized its non-conference schedule with the announcement of four more regular season match-ups and two exhibitions.

The Bulldogs will host St. Francis on Nov. 17, in addition to The Citadel (Nov. 19), Tennessee Tech (Dec. 3) and Yale (Dec. 6).

Butler's two exhibitions at Hinkle Fieldhouse will feature Tiffin Oct. 29 and Davenport on Nov. 1. Both exhibitions are slated to tip at 7 p.m.

These match-ups join previously-announced, non-conference schedule highlights that include the regular season opener versus New Orleans, the 2022 Battle 4 Atlantis, a home game against Kansas State as part of the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle, and road games at Penn State (as part of the Gavitt Tip-Off Games) and California.

Game times and television assignments will be announced at a later date. The BIG EAST conference schedule is expected to be released in mid-September.

Notes on 2022-23 Butler Non-Conference Schedule:
  • Features at least four Power 6 conference opponents (with the potential to play up to six such opponents based on Battle 4 Atlantis results)
  • Both Tennessee and Yale earned berths in the 2022 NCAA Tournament; depending on Battle 4 Atlantis results, Butler could play as many as four 2022 NCAA Tournament teams in the non-conference
  • Similar to Thad Matta at Butler, both The Citadel (Ed Conroy) and Kansas State (Jerome Tang) feature a new head coach for the 2022-23 season; like Matta, Conroy is also leading The Citadel for the second time.
  • This is Butler's third appearance in the Battle 4 Atlantis (2014, 2018).
  • Butler scored a program-record 144 points vs. The Citadel, Nov. 14, 2015 (a 144-71 win); it is the only previous meeting between the two men's basketball programs.
  • Butler also played Tiffin in an exhibition contest last season (2021-22 season).
  • The BIG EAST conference schedule will feature 20 games with both home and away match-ups with the other 10 BIG EAST teams.
Coach Thad Matta has returned to his alma mater to lead the Bulldogs for a second time. In his 17 years as a college head coach, which includes stints at Butler, Ohio State and Xavier, Matta possesses an incredible record of 439-154 (.740). Matta's teams won 20 or more games in 16 of those 17 seasons, advancing to the NCAA Tournament 13 times.

The Bulldogs return leading scorer Chuck Harris and significant contributors Jayden Taylor and Simas Lukosius from last season's roster. Matta has supplemented that young, talented group of Bulldogs this offseason with the addition of standout transfers Manny Bates (North Carolina State), Eric Hunter Jr. (Purdue), Jalen Thomas (Georgia State), and Ali Ali (Akron).

Season tickets are on sale now to cheer on the Butler men's basketball team at Hinkle Fieldhouse during the 2022-2023 campaign. The Bulldogs' home schedule features 18 contests, including all 10 BIG EAST opponents.
