Davidson Edges Butler 35-33

INDIANAPOLISLuka Zurak lined up for a potential game-winning 58-yard field goal on Butler's last play of the game, but the kick came up just short allowing Davidson to hold on for a 35-33 victory. The Wildcats remain undefeated in league play (3-0) with the win and move to 4-2 on the season. Butler now sits at 4-3 on the year and 2-2 in the Pioneer Football League.

Davidson posted 506 yards of total offense on Saturday with 282 yards coming on the ground. Mari Adams was the go-to back for the Wildcats accounting for 171 yards and three scores. QB Coulter Cleland was also impressive for the 'Cats completing 19 of his 20 pass attempts while adding two scores.

Jyran Mitchell and Bret Bushka led the BU rushing attack with 215 yards. Mitchell led the way with 123 yards and a fourth quarter TD run. Bushka broke off a 60-yard score in the second quarter to end the day with 92 rushing yards on just eight carries. Bushka also passed for 129 yards and found Ryan Lezon in the end zone midway through the first quarter.

The Lezon TD tied the game at 7-7, but Davidson would take control of the action in the second quarter, winning that 15-minute stretch 21-7. Adams scored twice in the second frame and a 25-yard pass from Coulter to Maione with just over a minute to play made the score 28-14 at the half.

Momentum shifted in the third quarter after a BU blocked punt. Jeremy Johnson broke through the line, blocked the punt, and recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. BU would then tack on three more points with a 40-yard Zurak field goal. The third quarter came to a close with Adams scoring his third TD of the contest.

BU didn't allow a point in the fourth quarter and came charging back into the game. Zurak hit from 29-yards out with 10:10 to play in the fourth and Mitchell's four-yard TD run made the score 35-33. BU elected to go for a two-point conversion and used a trick play that sent the ball out to Adam Dolan. The BU offensive lineman nearly crossed the goal line but was wrapped up just short on the play.

Butler's defense was led by Lucas Kozlowski and Jeremiah Johnson who each supplied the team with 12 tackles today. Adam Sturtz had six tackles and a sack and Will Mason picked off a pass in the end zone to stop a Davidson scoring opportunity.

The Bulldogs will get back to action on Oct. 21 with a road game at Dayton. Kick-off against the Flyers is set for 1 PM.
