Box Score Butler, ranked #10 in the nation, stayed undefeated with a 2-0 win over visiting Providence Saturday night at the Butler Bowl. The Bulldogs converted a pair of penalty kicks to secure the win and move to 7-0-1 on the season and 2-0 in the BIG EAST. Providence falls to 4-4 (0-2 BIG EAST).
Â
In the 77
th minute,
Lewis Suddick found himself alone on the left side off a cross and took a shot directly at the PC keeper Ben Seguljic, who made the save. He was unable to corral the ball and got tangled up with Suddick going for the rebound. The officials awarded a penalty kick, which
Jared Timmer was able to convert despite Seguljic getting a hand on the attempt. It was Timmer's first goal in a Butler uniform.
Â
Suddick was the instigator again four minutes later, getting pulled down in the box for another penalty kick. This time, he took it and sent it in the net for his sixth goal of the season.
Â
Butler came out of the gates strong, dominating possession in much of the first half. In the first 15 minutes alone, Butler had a 7-1 advantage in shots. On the evening, Butler out-shot PC, 18-8.
Â
The Bulldogs were unable to find the net in the first half and Providence responded with strong play early in the second half, controlling play for the first 15 minutes of the second stanza. That is when the momentum began to shift and the Bulldogs' attack created two opportunities in the box and the ensuing penalty kicks.
Â
Eric Dick made four saves in his fourth shutout of the season, including one save early in the second half on Julian Gressel that kept the game scoreless.
Â
Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week
David Goldsmith and
Isaac Galliford led Butler with four shots apiece. Suddick and Timmer each added three. Seguljic turned away eight Butler shots on goal.
Â
It was a fitting way to win the contest for Butler, relying on two penalty kicks after Providence ended the Bulldogs' 2015 campaign in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals when the teams played 110 minutes and then had to go to penalty kicks to decide who advanced to the conference tournament semifinals. PC advanced, 4-2, in that competition.
Â
The Bulldogs take a quick break from BIG EAST play Wednesday, traveling to in-state rival Indiana for a match-up of programs currently ranked in the Top 10. It is one of the marquee matches in college soccer this week. The 7:30 p.m. match will be streamed through BTN Plus. The Bulldogs return to the Butler Bowl Saturday, Oct. 1 for another important BIG EAST match-up, hosting Georgetown at 7 p.m.
