For the second consecutive week, Butler's opponent left the Sellick Bowl with its first Pioneer Football League loss of the season. Saturday, the Bulldogs used 229 yards on the ground to power by Campbell, 37-23. The Homecoming win in Indianapolis was Butler's third straight victory.
The Bulldogs, now 5-3 overall and 3-2 in PFL play, defeated Jacksonville a week ago. Both they and Campbell were undefeated in PFL play entering their match-up with Butler. The Camels are now 5-3 (4-1).
Sam Schrader had 94 yards rushing for Butler, including two touchdowns. He threw for a third touchdown, which was an 11-yard connection with
Cord Collier early in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 10-0 lead. He narrowly missed the third 100-yard game of his career and his first since 2014.
The Bulldogs built a 20-7 halftime lead and never looked back in the contest. Butler held the ball for nearly 42 minutes of game action, which was aided by converting 70 percent of their third downs (14-of-20).
Butler's 229 yards rushing came on 50 carries.
Brad Sznajder had 59 yards, while
Duvante Lane (36) and
Anthony Scaccia (30) jumped in the fray. Quarterback
Will Marty had 191 yards passing and his nine-yard touchdown scramble gave the Bulldogs a 27-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
Campbell would respond with a touchdown late in the third quarter, but would never get closer than a 10-point deficit.
Isaak Newhouse and
Luke Sennett each had eight tackles for the Bulldogs. Newhouse added an interception, fumble recovery and two pass break-ups.
Josh Willis and
Curt Beckman each had a sack; Willis's sack included a forced fumble.
Butler's defense limited Campbell to 34 rushing yards on 17 attempts and just three third-down conversions.
Pace Temple had 71 yards receiving for the Bulldogs.
Stephen Dennis had the first reception of his Butler career in the game.
Most of Campbell's offense came through the air as Daniel Smith passed for 321 yards. Aaron Blockmon had 128 receiving yards as he and Temple have been atop the PFL standings in that statistic for much of the season.
Butler's next two games are on the road, beginning with a Saturday, Oct. 28 contest at Dayton. The Bulldogs' final home game is Nov. 11 when Valparaiso visits the Sellick Bowl.
