Box Score
Butler moved into first place alone in the BIG EAST standings with a 2-0 win at Seton Hall Wednesday. The Bulldogs are now 6-1 in BIG EAST play and moved ahead of Georgetown, which tied Providence earlier in the day.
The Bulldogs now control their own destiny to potentially capture the BIG EAST regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament after winning the 2016 tournament title. Each BIG EAST team has two matches remaining.
The shutout also pushed Butler's streak of holding opponents scoreless to 410 minutes. It is the fourth consecutive shutout for the Bulldogs, who are now 10-4-1 overall on the season.
Wednesday marked the eighth shutout of the season for Butler keeper
Eric Dick, with the Bulldogs posting shutouts in five of the team's seven BIG EAST matches. Dick made five saves in the contest.
Butler took a 1-0 lead on a
Lewis Suddick penalty kick in the 35
th minute. The play that led to the PK started with a takeaway by
Alex Lehtinen on the edge of the middle third. He passed to
Isaac Galliford, who played a beautiful back-heel pass to Suddick on the left side. Suddick attempted to pass to a streaking Lehtinen in the box, but he was fouled before he could connect with the ball for a shot.
Butler's second goal came in the 50
th minute.
Bennett Kim played a ball to
Brandon Guhl at the top of the box. After a few touches, he left the ball for Galliford, who stepped into a left-footed laser to the left upper 90 as SHU keeper Peyton Elder couldn't react in time. It was Galliford's second goal of the season.
In addition to Dick's five saves, he came off his line several times to collect crosses or long balls and thwart threats by the Pirates. In the 67
th minute, off a quick corner from SHU, Francisco Alderete fired a shot along the end line. Dick made the initial save and the ball went over his head toward the goal.
Joe Moulden utilized a bicycle kick to clear the ball inches before he crossed the goal line.
Seton Hall (5-9-1, 2-5 BIG EAST) had a 9-5 advantage in shots with four of Butler's five shots being on goal. Suddick led the Bulldogs with three shots.
Butler's win Wednesday clinches not only a berth in the six-team BIG EAST Tournament, but it also guarantees the Bulldogs a top-four seed, which means their first tournament match will be hosted at the Sellick Bowl. That match will either be a quarterfinal or a semifinal match depending on the team's two final regular season contests.
Butler is now 4-0-1 all-time against Seton Hall and has never allowed a goal to the Pirates.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, traveling to Marquette for a BIG EAST contest. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m. (Eastern, 7 p.m. Central/Milwaukee). The match will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network, part of the FOX Sports Go app. Butler closes the regular season at home a week from tonight (Nov. 1), hosting Xavier at the Sellick Bowl.
