Top Defensive Teams Meet Sunday To Decide #BIGEASTwsoc Champion

NEW YORK – The 2017 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship presented by Jeep comes to a conclusion Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET in Washington, D.C. The tournament's top two seeds, No. 1 Georgetown and No. 2 Butler, battle it out on FS1 to determine the conference champion and winner of the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. Bernie Guenther and Monika Moore will be on the call, while John Fanta will report from the sideline.

'Defense wins championships' is without a doubt the theme of the day for Sunday, in particular, goalkeeping. Georgetown keeper Arielle Schechtman is the national leader in shutouts with 15 this season, including Thursday's 4-0 semifinal win over fourth-seeded Marquette. Butler has used a two-goalkeeper system all season, typically starting with Hannah Luedtke with Leonie Doege taking over in the second half. As a team, the Bulldogs lead the nation in goals against average, shutout percentage and save percentage, while Doege is the individual national leader in GAA and save percentage. Luedtke and Doege combined to shutout third-seeded Providence on Thursday in the semifinals, 3-0.

BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Schechtman is supported by BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Elizabeth Wenger. The Hoyas have allowed just one team to score more than one goal this season – national goals and points leader and the No. 1 team in Division I, Stanford. Butler has not allowed any team to score more than one goal as the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents during their current 17-game unbeaten streak, 33-3.

Two of the top offensive players in the BIG EAST will be challenged on Sunday. BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Paige Monaghan has been on a tear for Butler, totaling nine goals, five assists and 23 points over the last 11 outings. The junior has five goals over the last four games, including a score and assist in Thursday's win over the Friars. BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year Rachel Corboz has been equally as clutch for the Hoyas, highlighted by a five-point afternoon against the Golden Eagles on Thursday. The senior is Division I's active career leader in assists with 43, while also listing sixth in career points with 109.

Georgetown and Butler played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw in their regular-season meeting on Oct. 22 in Indianapolis. The Hoyas won the battle of shots, 14-10, with the Bulldogs' 10 shots the most GU has allowed this season with the exception of the Stanford match. The two teams have met just once in the postseason – the 2016 BIG EAST First Round, when Georgetown scored a 4-0 win as Amanda Carolan notched a pair of scores. The Hoyas lead the all-time series, 4-1-1, and are unbeaten over the last three, 2-0-1. The Bulldogs last beat Georgetown on Oct. 11, 2015, in Indianapolis, 1-0.

Georgetown and Butler are the two most recent winners of the BIG EAST Championship, with the Hoyas winning on their home turf in 2016 and the Bulldogs winning in Omaha, Neb., in 2015. This is Butler's second appearance in the title game and fourth for Georgetown, which shows a 1-2 finals mark after advancing in 2014 and 2012 as well.
