@ButlerMBB Adds Standout Guard Aaron Thompson to Recruiting Class

The Bulldogs have completed their recruiting class with the addition of Aaron Thompson. A four-star recruit as ranked by both Scout and ESPN, Thompson is generally regarded as a Top-30 point guard in the 2017 class.

Thompson, from Glenn Dale, Md., played for Paul VI Catholic (Va.) High School. A two-year starter and four-year contributor, Thompson was part of 100 wins at Paul VI, the most of any player in program history. Thompson is the first player in Paul VI's storied history to amass more than 800 points, 400 assists, 300 rebounds, and 200 steals in his career.

"Aaron possesses a lot of the intangibles – toughness, competitiveness, leadership – that are highly valued in our program," said Butler coach Chris Holtmann. "He is a very talented player and an excellent student. Aaron has the potential to be an elite defender and a very solid lead guard in the BIG EAST. We are excited about what he can be right away and what he can grow into throughout his career."

The Washington Post All-Metropolitan first-team selection averaged 10.9 points as a senior for the 29-8 Panthers, the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference runners-up.

As a junior, Thompson averaged 9.3 points per game to lead Paul VI to a 22-11 record and state championship game appearance. He earned second-team All-WCAC honors as both a junior and sophomore before earning first-team honors as a senior.

He averaged 7.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game in leading Team Takeover to a 10-6 mark during the 2016 EYBL circuit.

Thompson's older brother, Anthony, was a four-year basketball student-athlete at Holy Cross, just finishing his senior campaign.

Thompson joins a Butler recruiting class that was already rated the best in program history prior to Thompson's commitment. The class also includes forward Kyle Young, as well as wing players Christian David, Cooper Neese and Jerald Butler.

The Bulldogs went 25-9 during the 2016-17 campaign, advancing to the Sweet 16. Kelan Martin and Kamar Baldwin, who each received postseason BIG EAST accolades, highlight a group of returning players.
