Box Score
Butler fell to Drake, 27-16, Saturday afternoon at the Sellick Bowl in a Pioneer Football League match-up.
With the result, Butler is now 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in PFL play, while Drake improves to 3-2 (2-0).
Receiver
Pace Temple led Butler's offensive attack with seven catches for 138 yards. It was the sixth 100-yard receiving day of his Butler career. That includes three of the last four games.
The two Bulldog squads traded scores early in the contest as Butler put a pair of
Drew Bevelhimer field goals on the board, while Drake posted touchdowns on its first three possessions, taking a 21-6 lead midway through the second quarter.
Butler responded with a 75-yard drive, capped by an
Anthony Scaccia six-yard touchdown run to pull within 21-13 at halftime. However, the teams would combine for only three field goals in the second half.
The Butler defense would bend but not break in the second half as Drake drove to Butler's nine-yard line early in the fourth quarter before
Connor Andras recovered a fumble to give Butler the ball back. After a Butler punt, Butler's defense was able to crash the Drake pocket and get to quarterback Grant Kraemer. The officials ruled his arm was moving forward on a bang-bang play and called an incomplete pass on a
Chad Burdo hurry that saw
Xavier Colvin pick up the loose ball and head toward the end zone.
Drake's ensuing 38-yard field goal from Danny Donley would give the visitors a 27-16 lead. Butler's final two possessions ended with an interception and on downs.
Will Marty threw for 197 yards for Butler. Bevelhimer made all three of his field goal attempts as the sophomore moved over 100 career points.
Duvante Lane had 70 yards on 16 carries.
Kraemer completed 27 of 40 attempts for 329 yards. He threw two touchdown passes.
Luke Sennett had 10 tackles to lead Butler;
Isaak Newhouse added nine.
Chad Burdo and
Josh Willis each two tackles for loss.
Butler returns to action Saturday (Oct. 7), traveling to Morehead State for a 1 p.m. PFL match-up. The Bulldogs return to the Sellick Bowl the following week, hosting Jacksonville.
