The Bulldogs finish off the 2018 season with a road contest at rival Xavier Wednesday night in Cincinnati. The 7 p.m. kick will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
Butler has been eliminated from postseason play, but can play spoiler to Xavier's BIG EAST Tournament hopes. A Butler win coupled with a DePaul win against Marquette would keep the Musketeers from earning one of the six spots in the BIG EAST Tournament.
The Bulldogs enter the season finale with a 4-11-2 overall record and a 2-6 mark in BIG EAST play. In the team's six seasons as a member of the BIG EAST, this will only be the second time that the Bulldogs have failed to qualify for the conference's postseason tournament.
Xavier is 3-4-1 in conference play and 5-7-5. The Musketeers' 10 points in BIG EAST matches place them sixth currently in the conference standings.
THE SERIES: Butler owns a 13-5-1 record in the all-time series between the two programs. Of its BIG EAST rivals, Butler has faced Xavier the most in a series that dates back to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference and Atlantic 10 seasons, as well as the two schools being in close proximity for non-conference match-ups over the years.
ONE YEAR AGO: Butler and Xavier met twice in 2017. Butler took a 2-1 win in Indianapolis during the regular season. The teams officially played to a 2-2 (2OT) tie in the BIG EAST semifinals (also in Indianapolis), but the Musketeers advanced on PKs, 4-1.
In the regular season finale, Butler's goals came from
Isaac Galliford and
Eric Leonard in posting the 2-1 win.
In the BIG EAST Tournament match,
Kieran Geldenhuys and
Joe Moulden registered the goals as the Bulldogs erased a 2-0 deficit with two goals in the final 12 minutes of regulation to push the match to extra time.
LAST TIME OUT: The Bulldogs were eliminated from postseason play with a 2-1 loss at the hands of Marquette Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis. The Golden Eagles scored both goals in the first half. Butler cut the lead in half in the 47
th minute as Marquette keeper Luis Barraza was given a red card for a tackle in the box.
Alex Lehtinen converted the ensuing penalty kick. However, playing a man up over the final 43 minutes, the Bulldogs were unable to find the equalizer.
SPREAD IT AROUND: The score at DePaul Oct. 13 was the first goal ofÂ

FOUR SCORE AND…: Butler scored four goals in a match (vs. Marshall, Sept. 26) for the first time in more than two years, dating back to a 4-2 win over No. 5 UC-Santa Barbara Sept. 9, 2016.

HONOR ROLL: CaptainÂ
Jared Timmer earned a spot on the BIG EAST's five-member weekly honor roll after scoring both goals in a 2-2 tie Oct. 2 at Evansville. Both of Timmer's goals came as the Bulldogs were playing a man down. The two goals at Evansville were his first scores of 2018.
DOUBLING UP: JuniorÂ
Alex Lehtinen scored both goals for the Bulldogs Sept. 22 against Providence, the first multi-goal game of his Butler career. Lehtinen started the scoring with a goal in the 25
