@ButlerMSoccer Takes Four-Match Unbeaten Streak to Seton Hall Saturday Afternoon

Butler continues a road swing, traveling to New Jersey for a Saturday afternoon contest with Seton Hall. The match is the second of a three-game trek away from Indianapolis for the Bulldogs, who enter the match at 7-4-1.

The match-up also serves as the first of five consecutive BIG EAST contests for the Bulldogs to close the regular season. Seton Hall is 5-5 overall and 2-2 in BIG EAST play. The Pirates are undefeated (4-0) at home so far in 2019.

The 1 p.m. match will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.

BIG EAST BREAKDOWN:

The top six teams in the final BIG EAST standings make the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament. Butler, 1-2-1 in conference play, is currently tied for sixth with four points. Seton Hall (six points) is part of a three-way tie for third. The Bulldogs' early BIG EAST schedule has included the top two teams in the conference standings (St. John's and Georgetown) as well as a win over one of the teams tied for third (Providence).

THE SERIES:

Seton Hall's 2-1 win in 2018 was the Pirates' first in the all-time series with the Bulldogs. Butler owns a 4-1-1 record in the series that dates back to the 2013 season when the Bulldogs joined the BIG EAST. The Bulldogs own a 9-2 goal differential in the series with the draw being a 0-0 (2OT) result in 2014 in Indianapolis.

ONE YEAR AGO:

Seton Hall used two second-half goals to post a 2-1 win over Butler Oct. 24, 2018 in Indianapolis. Logan Lee gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in just the fourth minute.

The second half was a different story as the Pirates found the equalizer just 20 seconds in. CJ Tibbling knotted the match at 1-1. McKenzie Carlton's eventual game-winner came in the 50th minute of play.

LAST TIME OUT:

Another game-winner from freshman Wilmer Cabrera, Jr., gave the Bulldogs a hard-fought road win Wednesday night at Lipscomb. The golden goal came in the 98th minute.

Butler used a series of passes to establish possession just outside the Lipscomb box as the first overtime session began to wind down. Cabrera, Jr., played a ball back to senior captain Jared Timmer, who surveyed the field and then flicked the ball over two Lipscomb defenders and onto the foot of Cabrera, Jr. The freshman beat the Lipscomb keeper to the right side of the goal for the golden goal in the 98th minute.

The teams had played more than 80 consecutive minutes without a goal prior to Cabrera, Jr.'s heroics.

In the 11th minute, Butler pressure resulted in a corner kick. Joel Harvey stepped up and was able to wrap the corner kick inside the back post utilizing his left foot.

Butler's lead was short-lived as the hosts responded four minutes later, gaining possession after a tackle in the Butler offensive third. The ensuing counter-attack resulted in Ruben Pedersen taking a quick touch off a pass just beyond midfield to get by a Butler defender and sending a blast to the upper left side of the goal from just outside the box.

OF NOTE:

  • Cabrera, Jr.'s goal was his fourth of the season; all four have been game-winners. The four game-winners are tied for the BIG EAST lead.
  • Brandon Guhl and Wilmer Cabrera, Jr., are tied for the team lead with four goals.
  • The Bulldogs out-shot Lipscomb, 13-9, in the contest.
  • Butler is undefeated in four straight matches, posting a 3-0-1 record so far in October.
  • The Bulldogs are 2-1-1 in overtime matches in 2019.
  • Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji made two saves in picking up the win Wednesday night. His 4.50 saves per game average is second in the BIG EAST.
  • Harvey's goal was the second of his Butler career, with his first coming as a freshman in 2017.
  • Wednesday's match was Timmer's second of the season after returning from injury. He scored a goal in Saturday's draw against DePaul and assisted on the game-winner against Lipscomb.
  • Butler is now 2-2 on the road in 2019.
  • Wednesday's match with Lipscomb served as the final non-conference contest of the season for Butler.
  • Two of Butler's regular Starting XI missed Wednesday's match. Jack Haywood sat out after accumulating five yellow cards so far this season; Griffin DeBolt did not travel due to injury.
