@ButlerMSoccer and Creighton Meet Saturday in Omaha as Regular Season Winds Down

The final road trip of the 2019 regular season takes the Bulldogs to Omaha, Neb., for a Saturday night match-up with Creighton. The kick is scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. Central/Omaha).

Butler enters at 9-5-1 overall (3-3-1 in BIG EAST play). Creighton is 7-6-1 (3-4 BIG EAST). All 10 BIG EAST programs are ranked among the Top 68 spots in this week's NCAA RPI metric, including No. 1 Georgetown and No. 3 St. John's.

FOLLOW ALONG: Saturday night's match will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, which can be found on YouTube, Caffeine and Twitter. Live stats are also available. Visit the schedule page on ButlerSports.com for links.

BIG EAST BREAKDOWN: Both Butler and Creighton are in the hunt for a berth in the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament. The Bulldogs, with 10 conference points, are currently in fourth. Creighton, with nine conference points, is one of three teams tied for fifth. The top six teams in the conference standings qualify for the tournament. A win by Butler on Saturday would guarantee the Bulldogs one of the six spots in the BIG EAST Tournament regardless of their result in the regular season finale next week.

THE SERIES: Creighton owns a 7-2-1 record in the all-time series, including a 3-0-1 advantage in matches played in Omaha. Butler has won two of the last three meetings between the programs, which included a 3-2 overtime victory in the 2017 BIG EAST opener as well as a 2-1 win in the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament championship match.

ONE YEAR AGO: No. 25 Creighton posted a 3-0 win over Butler Sept. 15, 2018 in Omaha, Neb., in the BIG EAST opener for both teams. After a scoreless first half, the Bluejays took control of the match with two goals in the first five minutes of the second half. Ziyad Fares took a long ball from Luke Haakenson and then found the net in the 48th minute. Less than two minutes later, Sven Koenig collected a deflected ball and scored to give the Bluejays a 2-0 lead. Koenig scored again in the 74th minute, less than two minutes after Butler went a man down in the match.

Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji made seven saves on the night. Creighton had a 16-5 advantage in shots.

LAST TIME OUT: Brandon Guhl's header off a corner kick found the net in the 103rd minute, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 win over Villanova Sunday at Varsity Field in Indianapolis. The golden goal was Guhl's seventh tally of the season. Joel Harvey assisted on the game-winner.

For Guhl, it was a fitting end as he was one of five seniors recognized on the day.

OF NOTE:

  • Gabriel Gjergji posted the shutout Sunday for Butler – his fifth of the season. His 4.20 saves per game are fourth in the BIG EAST.
  • Butler out-shot Villanova, 23-12, and had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Guhl leads the Bulldogs and is fourth in the BIG EAST with 16 points. Wilmer Cabrera, Jr. is tied for fifth in the BIG EAST with 15 points.
  • Guhl's seven goals are tied for third in the BIG EAST; Cabrera, Jr., with six, is tied for fifth.
  • Jack Haywood is tied for the BIG EAST lead with seven assists. That mark is tied for 17th nationally.
  • Cabrera, Jr.'s four game-winning goals are tied for second in the BIG EAST and tied for 13th in the NCAA.
  • Butler is 3-3 on the road in 2019, including 2-1 in BIG EAST play. Butler is 6-2-1 at home.
  • Only one of Butler's five overtime contests in 2019 has ended in a tie. Butler is now 3-1-1 in those contests.
  • The Oct. 23 loss at Marquette ended a five-match unbeaten streak (4-0-1) for Butler. The Bulldogs had not lost since Sept. 28.
  • Ten Bulldogs have found the net in 2019; 13 have scored points during the campaign.
  • The Oct. 19 win at Seton Hall was Butler's first four-goal game since a 4-3 (OT) win over Marshall Sept. 26, 2018.
  • After scoring the first two goals of his career in the Oct. 4 win over Providence, Brendan Hicks earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors Oct. 7.
  • The Bulldogs played three consecutive Top 10 opponents earlier this season. That included BIG EAST losses to Georgetown and St. John's, sandwiched around a 2-1 win over (then) No. 5 Indiana.
  • Butler limited Wisconsin to only four shots in the win Sept. 12; it marked the fewest shots allowed by Butler since an Oct. 12, 2012 match against Richmond when the Spiders were also held to just four shots.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs close out the regular season Wednesday (Nov. 6), hosting Xavier in a 2 p.m. match at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. The BIG EAST Tournament begins Saturday, Nov. 9 with a pair of quarterfinal matches.
