@ButlerMenSoccer and Indiana Meet Wednesday in Top 10 Match-up

Full Notes (PDF)

51 MILES: That's the distance between Indianapolis and Bloomington, Ind. The Bulldogs will make that trek Wednesday night for a match-up featuring two of the Top 10 programs in the country as the Bulldogs meet Indiana. Both teams enter the contest undefeated. The 7:30 p.m. match will be streamed live on BTN Plus.

UNBLEMISHED: Through the matches of Sunday, Sept. 25, Butler is now one of just five programs nationally that has yet to suffer a loss. Loyola (Chicago) is 7-0, while Butler's 7-0-1 record is second nationally in terms of percentage. The other programs have at least two ties. Indiana (5-0-4) is one of the other undefeated programs, as is future opponent Denver. Maryland is the fifth program without a loss thus far.

IN THE RANKINGS: Butler is ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA national poll (with a new poll expected Tuesday). The Bulldogs have climbed in the other two prominent national polls, now ranking No. 6 in the College Soccer News poll and No. 9 in this week's TopDrawerSoccer rankings.

INCOMING…UPCOMING: This week's College Soccer News poll showcases the challenge ahead for the Bulldogs. Butler comes in at No. 6, followed by Louisville at No. 7. Those two teams played to a scoreless tie in the season opener. Teams 8-10 (Indiana, Denver, Creighton) all appear on Butler's schedule within the next two weeks. The other contest during that stretch is the defending BIG EAST champion Georgetown Hoyas, who were ranked in the Top 10 preseason.

BY THE NUMBERS: The NCAA released its first RPI rankings of the season Monday, and Butler came in at No. 7. All BIG EAST programs are in the Top 114. The Bulldogs have tied with No. 2 Louisville already this season, and have wins over Villanova (22), UC Santa Barbara (69), Evansville (77), Providence (83), and Oregon State (87). Upcoming opponents include Xavier (19), Creighton (26), Denver (31), St. John's (54), Georgetown (55), and Indiana (64).

THE SERIES: Indiana holds a 21-4-3 record in the all-time series between the two programs, but the teams have been even over the last eight meetings. In that span that dates back to the 2009 season, the record is 3-3-2. The teams played to a draw in both 2015 (2-2 in Indianapolis) and 2014 (0-0 in Bloomington). Butler won the 2013 match-up, 3-2 in double-overtime, in Indianapolis.

COUNT ON SUSPENSE: The past few meetings between Butler and Indiana have involved comebacks and heroics. Last season, the Bulldogs overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit with two Vincent Mitchell goes to level the match, which ended in a 2-2 draw. In 2013, Indiana had a 2-0 lead with five minutes remaining in regulation before the Bulldogs scored twice to force overtime. In the 104th minute, David Goldsmith scored the game-winner for a 3-2 triumph.

MOST RECENTLY ON THE PITCH: Butler posted a 2-0 win over visiting Providence Saturday night at the Butler Bowl. The Bulldogs converted a pair of penalty kicks to secure the victory. Jared Timmer and Lewis Suddick each contributed a successful penalty kick, coming in the 77th and 81st minute, respectively. Butler out-shot PC, 18-8, in the match.

DYNAMIC DUO: Senior David Goldsmith and freshman Lewis Suddick are both in the top 20 nationally in goals per game and points per game. Goldsmith has seven goals (11th in NCAA) and 17 points (sixth nationally) on the season, while Suddick has six goals (18th nationally) and 14 points (19th in the NCAA). Goldsmith leads the BIG EAST in points, while Suddick is fourth.

EVERYONE'S IN ON THE ACT: Butler has 21 goals through eight matches this season, with that average of 2.63 goals ranking third in the NCAA (North Carolina leads at 3.13). The Bulldogs are also second in the country at 7.88 points per game. Seven different Bulldogs have scored goals so far this season, while 13 players have registered at least one point.

YOU GET NOTHING…AND YOU'LL LIKE IT: Goalkeeper Eric Dick has orchestrated shutouts in four of Butler's eight matches thus far this season, posting a 0.85 goals against average. His four shutouts are tied for the lead in the BIG EAST. He has 27 saves on the season, highlighted by 10 saves in the regular season opener at Louisville. The total was just off his career-high of 12. Dick played every minute (1,702) in goal for the Bulldogs in 2016. He posted a 0.90 goals against average and seven shutouts in the team's 18 matches. Five of his shutouts came in the team's nine BIG EAST matches.

ON THE WEEK: Senior defender Mitch Ostrowski guided the defense in an impressive 2-0 week, earning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors. Butler allowed only one goal in 180 minutes of play, including posting a shutout against Providence. Ostrowski also had two assists in the team's 3-1 win over Evansville Tuesday. In the two matches, Butler combined to out-shoot its opponents 36-15. Lewis Suddick had a pair of goals, earning BIG EAST Honor Roll accolades.

THIS GUY IS ON FIRE: Senior forward David Goldsmith did not have a point in the team's first three matches of the season, but has scored 17 points in the team's last five matches. Goldsmith was selected as the National Player of the Week by three outlets on Sept. 12 after an impressive weekend of play. The NSCAA, College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer each named Goldsmith as their recipient of the national weekly honor. The Bristol, England product had two goals and an assist in the team's 4-2 win over (then) #7 Santa Barbara. He added two goals in the 3-0 win over Oregon State, which was receiving votes in the national polls.

BIG WEEKLY: David Goldsmith was selected as the BIG EAST Player of the Week on both Sept. 12 and Sept. 19. He was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week both weeks.

FIRE WHEN READY: David Goldsmith leads the nation in both shots and shots on goal, averaging 5.25 and 2.63 respectively in those two categories.

A REPEAT OF FIRSTS: Redshirt senior Mitch Ostrowski picked up the first goal of his Butler career Sept. 9 against UC Santa Barbara. He also has three assists on the season after entering 2016 with just two in 48 career matches…sophomore Jared Timmer converted a penalty kick Saturday against Providence, his first goal in a Butler uniform…redshirt junior Tanner Witsken assisted on David Goldsmith's game-winner at Villanova in the BIG EAST opener; it was the first point of Witsken's Butler career.

MARCO…GOAL-O: Sophomore Marco Charalambous has three goals on the season, with all three coming in the team's last six matches. He had the first goal of the match against Oregon State Sept. 11, proving to be the game-winner. He had one goal and four assists in 2015, earning a spot on the BIG EAST All-Newcomer Team.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: With 36 career goals entering this week's action, senior David Goldsmith is third among active players in career goals. Despite missing four matches due to injury last season, Goldsmith finished third nationally in goals per game.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: Butler's 2016 roster includes seven players from overseas. Six of the seven have started all eight matches. David Goldsmith (England), Marco Charalambous (Cyprus), Kieran Geldenhuys (Dubai, UAE), and Joe Moulden (England) started a majority of the contests a season ago. They were joined in the Starting XI by a trio of freshmen in Alex Lehtinen (Finland), Lewis Suddick (England) and Isaac Galliford (England). Lehtinen has started six of his seven matches.
