The Bulldogs look to continue their climb up the BIG EAST standings with a Wednesday night match-up with Seton Hall at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. The 7 p.m. kick will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, part of the FOX Sports app.
The match also serves as Senior Night for Butler as the team will recognize seven seniors – captains
Joe Moulden and
Kieran Geldenhuys, as well as
Michael Peay,
Marco Charalambous,
Braden Van Allen,
Ryan Clark, and
Will LeFevre.
The Bulldogs have won two straight conference matches to climb into the thick of the chase for the six BIG EAST Tournament berths. Butler enters the match at 4-9-2 overall and 2-4 in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall is 5-5-2 (1-4-1). Butler is now only one point out of sixth. In addition to Wednesday's match against Seton Hall, the Bulldogs' remaining matches include Marquette and Xavier, two of the teams just above Butler in the standings. Â
Â
THE SERIES: Butler has never lost to Seton Hall, having posted a 4-0-1 record in the series that dates back to the 2013 season when the Bulldogs joined the BIG EAST. The Bulldogs own an 8-0 goal differential in the all-time series with the draw being a 0-0 (2OT) result in 2014 in Indianapolis.
ONE YEAR AGO: Behind five saves from
Eric Dick, the Bulldogs took a 2-0 win at Seton Hall, Oct. 25, 2017. Butler took a 1-0 lead on aÂ
Lewis Suddick penalty kick in the 35
th minute. Butler's second goal came in the 50
th minute.Â
Bennett Kim played a ball toÂ
Brandon Guhl at the top of the box. After a few touches, he left the ball for Galliford, who stepped into a left-footed laser to the left upper 90 as SHU keeper Peyton Elder couldn't react in time.
LAST TIME OUT: FreshmanÂ
Logan Lee's goal in the 90
th minute gave Butler a come-from-behind 2-1 win Saturday afternoon at Villanova. It marks Butler's second consecutive conference win. With 37 seconds remaining in regulation, the match was restarted with a face-off. Butler ultimately gained possession and began an attack up the right side.Â
Kieran Geldenhuys made a cross to the top of the box, which found the foot of Lee. His initial shot was blocked, but he collected his own rebound and sent in a low shot inside the left post to put the Bulldogs ahead with only nine seconds remaining. Lee had subbed back in the contest at the stoppage with 37 ticks left on the clock.
THERE THAT (FRESH)MAN AGAIN: For the second consecutive week,
Logan Lee was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after scoring the game-winner in a Butler conference win. Lee netted the game-winner against Villanova, one week after depositing the game-winner at DePaul in a 3-1 win. Those are the two goals for Lee so far this season.
EXPERIENCE IN THE BACK LINE: Beginning with the team's win at DePaul, coach
Paul Snape has made a line-up switch, moving captain
Jared Timmer from the midfield to center back. He joins fellow captain
Joe Moulden in the middle, while senior captain
Kieran Geldenhuys has moved out wide on the right side. In the team's (new) formation that includes
Alex Lehtinen on the left side, the back line includes two seniors, a redshirt junior, and a junior.
BREAKING THROUGH IN CONFERENCE PLAY: Consistent attacking in the second half resulted in the Bulldogs' first BIG EAST win of the 2018 season as Butler went up to DePaul and earned a 3-1 win Saturday, Oct. 13. DePaul found the net first with a score in the 60
thminute.
Alex Lehtinen deposited a penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1 in the 68
th minute.
Logan Lee scored the game-winner in the 82
nd minute asÂ
Jack Haywood played a ball to him at the top of the key. As Nuelle came charging off his line, Lee was able to get the shot over his head for the 2-1 lead.
Brandon Guhl added an insurance goal in the 85
th minute asÂ
Marco Charalambous utilized some fancy footwork to keep possession of the ball up the left side. Guhl finished his cross for his sixth goal of the season.
ON THE OFFENSIVE: Junior
Brandon Guhl is tied for fourth in the BIG EAST in goals (six) and tied for third in points (15).
SPREAD IT AROUND: The score at DePaul was the first goal of
Logan Lee's Butler career. He becomes the 11
th Bulldog to register a goal this season, including five freshmen. Lee joins classmates
Jack Haywood,
Louie Bulger,
Eric Conerty, and
Eric Hollenkamp in finding the net in their first year.
FOUR SCORE AND…: Butler scored four goals in a match (vs. Marshall, Sept. 26) for the first time in more than two years, dating back to a 4-2 win over No. 5 UC-Santa Barbara Sept. 9, 2016. Butler has scored two or more goals in eight of the team's first 15 matches this season. The Bulldogs scored two or more goals in six of the team's first 15 matches in 2017.
NEW TO THE LINE-UP: Seven true freshmen have registered a start for the Bulldogs this season:
Gabriel Gjergji,
Louie Bulger,
Jack Haywood,
Eric Conerty,
Griffin DeBolt,
Logan Lee, and
Eric Hollenkamp.
HELPING FOOT:
Marco Charalambous assisted on three of Butler's four goals against Marshall Sept. 26. He becomes the 12
th Bulldog in program history to have three assists in one contest in addition to Matt Morgan, who had four helpers against Valparaiso in a 1991 match.
HONOR ROLL: Captain
Jared Timmer earned a spot on the BIG EAST's five-member weekly honor roll after scoring both goals in a 2-2 tie Oct. 2 at Evansville. Both of Timmer's goals came as the Bulldogs were playing a man down. Timmer also led the Bulldogs with four shots against Georgetown. The two goals at Evansville were his first scores of 2018.
DOUBLING UP: JuniorÂ
Alex Lehtinen scored both goals for the Bulldogs Sept. 22 against Providence, the first multi-goal game of his Butler career. Lehtinen started the scoring with a goal in the 25
th minute; he then followed that by converting a penalty kick in the 88
th minute. For his efforts, Lehtinen earned a spot on the BIG EAST's five-member weekly honor roll.
UP NEXT: Butler continues BIG EAST play Sunday with the final home match of the 2018 regular season. The Bulldogs welcome Marquette to Indianapolis in a match that will be played at Varsity Field on Butler's west campus. The kick is set for 1 p.m. Â
